What is a defective crane? What is a defective crane boom?

A defective crane tips over as a result of poorly designed stability outriggers. Many cranes and boom trucks have outriggers that extend beyond the perimeters of the vehicle in order to provide stability during crane or boom operations.

Some manufacturers fail to provide interlock systems that will prevent crane operations when the outriggers do not have firm contact with the ground. In most cases, failure to have firm contact with the ground will result in vehicle instability and can result in vehicle overturns. Interlock devices with the stability outriggers prevent crane or boom operation if the outriggers are not in firm contact with the ground, thereby preventing crane use and tip over due to improper outrigger contact.
