The family of a 19-year-old female college student who was hit in a crosswalk and died two hours later has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver and his family. (See: http://www.rep-am.com /articles/2008/01/23/ap-state-ct/d8ubr6ng0.txt)The driver, also a 19-year old male college student was visiting his girlfriend at her college in Conn. when he struck the female college student. Instead of stopping to help or see if he she was okay or needed help, he drove away as urged by the other passengers in the SUV including his girlfriend who all claimed to be scared.
The driver's parents are charged for trying to cover up his involvement. After found he pleaded no contest to misconduct with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility. His plea called for a 4-year prison sentence but his lawyers argued less jail time of three years plus one month plus five years probation, perform 500 hours of community service, and pay $500 a year during probation to a memorial fund.
As to whether or not the driver was drunk is still a mystery as he was not cited for drunk driving but there have been conflicting comments as to no he was not drinking to only took a sip to had a few beers.
The judge was disturbed that he drove away without stopping and that both his driving and his judgment were impaired.
The driver was filled with remorse and offered his condolences to the dead girl's family.
