Megabus Accident Kills Four in Syracuse, NY Area
Recent reports from multiple media sources including syracuse.com show how installations like the railroad bridge the crosses over the Onondaga Lake Parkway in New York can pose a significant threat to bus passengers and others in larger-sized vehicles.

File photos of the bridge abutment just north of downtown Syracuse in New York show a 10'9" clearance for several lanes of traffic. According to news reports, a double-decker Megabus collided with the metal installation at 2:30 a.m. on September 11, 2010 after the bus driver lost his way and did not realize the low hanging bridge would impact the top of the bus. Four passengers died, and several more sustained injuries on the Philadelphia-Toronto trip, forcing New York officials to look again at what remains a hazardous area for buses. Low clearance areas are especially dangerous for vehicles such as Megabuses since they are so tall. Drivers often do not anticipate that the bus will not fit underneath, which can cause severe injury or even death to passengers.

Although local officials had installed some signage and other warnings for the low clearance, where estimates show that over 20,000 commuters pass by daily, some other solutions are not yet in place. These include low hanging chains or sensors that would further warn drivers and a lower speed limit when approaching the abutment.
A history of accidents at the low clearance area shows that this month's accident is the first to involve fatalities. While those in charge are considering additional safeguards, any future fixes would be too late for the grieving families of these innocent bus passengers, as well as those with significant injuries after the crash. Many victims in situations like this rely on professional bus accident lawyers to help them get the compensation they need under the law after negligence leaves them with injuries or a death in the family.
