Medtronic buys and distributes tissue products to hospitals and health professionals in the United States and Canada. The products are used for such procedures as fracture repair and spinal fusion surgery.

Medtronic first began purchasing the questionable tissues from Biomedical Tissue Services in May 2002.

While the exact amount of distributed tainted tissue is unknown, hospitals are now contacting hundreds of patients who may be at risk. Tissue distributor Medtronic Inc. recently came forward with a report that stated they implanted as many as 8,000 body parts, all of which came from Biomedical Tissue Services.

A Tennessee patient learned in December 2005 that the spinal column surgery that he had in November late 2004 with bones that could be considered as improperly retained. His physician said that Medtronics would be contacting the patient about a possible recall; the patient never heard from Medtronic Sofamor Danek.

Medtronic did not notify the appropriate department at the University of Tennessee Medical Center of the recall until mid-November. When Medtronic officials came later that month to remove the recalled tissue from the hospital’s inventory, they accidentally left some behind. By the time Medtronic notified the hospital, the recalled tissue had been used in a January 2005 surgery - the only surgery at UTMC in which recalled tissue was used after the hospital had been made aware of the situation.
