Body Part Transplants
Can I get diseases from a body part transplant? The FDA and hospital officials have suggested that certain patients who received the stolen body parts should be tested for viruses as a precaution. They also insist that the risk of becoming infected from cadaver tissue transplants is a minor one. Patients are not reassured. The list of potential victims covers patients in many states including New York, New Jersey, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Tennessee to name a few. Cadaver tissue transplants were shipped all over including Canada. A 41-year old female patient who received a cadaver tissue transplant in her back claims that she contracted syphilis from the diseased body part transplant and plans to sue the hospital. She had undergone surgery for back pain due to an injury. Hospitals sent letters to patients warning them that they could be at risk for HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis. The letters also explained that the human tissue products used for the patients’ surgeries may have come from body parts that were removed without permission or medical safeguards. Can I get diseases from a body part transplant? The tissue banks used by the hospitals were responsible for screening and sterilizing the human tissue products they sold. The cadaver transplants were delivered to hospitals in sealed containers, ready to be used during surgery. According to the legal community, the number of potential cadaver transplant plaintiffs is virtually limitless. It’s a problem that could affect almost any hospital or medical center spinal surgeries are performed. |
