Anticipatory Grief and Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma Lung Cancer Attorneys

Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos diseases. Although rare, mesothelioma cancer is not uncommon for men in their 60s and older. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure in building supplies, shipyards, and the military. Women and young children can and have developed mesothelioma but not nearly in the numbers of men that have developed the disease. Mesothelioma may lie dormant for decades because it’s difficult to diagnose. When finally gets diagnosed, the prognosis will not be good.

Families who have a father, husband, brother, grandfather, or uncle diagnosed with mesothelioma will probably suffer anticipatory grief or the reaction that happens before an impending loss. The mesothelioma victim may also experience his own anticipatory grief.

A whirl of feelings accompanies anticipatory grief. It’s never easy to admit that the trusted person in your life is going to die and you can do nothing to stop it. Loved ones will feel anxiety, dread, guilt, anger, denial, depression, bargaining, hopelessness, helplessness, and perhaps acceptance.

Knowing vs. not knowing that the special person in your life is going to die is never an easy path. Most likely you will experience anticipatory grieving before and post-grieving afterwards. Will your grieving be less or be more? Every situation has a different outcome.

At least there is time to get your affairs and papers in order, make wishes known, and renew connections so your extended family and friends can share stories to cherish later.
