Thousands of schools built before the mid-1970s have potentially lethal levels of asbestos. Attempts to hasten asbestos removal are in progress. Asbestos was linked to the deaths of 73 school teachers from the lung cancer mesothelioma between 1991 and 2000.

A health and safety committee advised teachers to stop displaying pupils' work by putting pins in asbestos insulating board on school walls and ceilings.
