What is ADHD?
ADHD is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. ADHD is a condition that affects about 3 to 7 percent of school-aged children. Although symptoms are first noticed in childhood, some children's symptoms continue into their adult lives.
What are the symptoms of ADHD?
The most common behaviors are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
What causes ADHD?
The exact origin of ADHD is unknown, but speculation is that the disorder may be caused by one or more of several factors such as predictors of persistence including family history of the disorder, psychiatric and psychosocial adversity. Pregnancy and delivery complications, maternal smoking during pregnancy, and adverse family environment variables are considered important risk factors for ADHD. The etiology of ADHD has not been clearly identified, although evidence supports neurobiologic and genetic origins.
Do an equal number of boys and girls have ADHD?
Major symptoms of ADHD in girls appear similar boys, even though ADHD is less frequently diagnosed in girls. Girls with ADHD are less likely to have accompanying disruptive behavior disorders, which may be one reason for their lower rate of diagnosis.
What is the treatment of ADHD?
Although there is no cure for ADHD there are treatments that specifically target its symptoms. Some doctors have prescribed Adderall and similar amphetamine drugs.
What if ADHD is not treated?
If left untreated, ADHD may cause serious problems. ADHD frequently causes poor performance at school, as well as, problems with social and family relationships. Evidence suggests that many children and adults with untreated ADHD may be at risk for other problems such as drug abuse, low self-esteem, and anti-social behavior.
How can I cope with my child’s ADHD?
ADHD is a disorder that affects all aspects of a child’s life, having the appropriate support team is a necessity. Support should include healthcare professionals, educators, family members, and people from community institutions.
