For years, many people assumed that if they secured their young child in a car "properly" the child would be kept safe if a collision occurred. Newsday has pointed out that to litigation has had a unique effect on car safety.

Auto and car safety is something that should never be taken lightly. However, there are those who do not feel that many of the laws regarding automobile safety are necessary. The reason for this is that people develop a certain way of driving and they do not like their preferences changed or imposed upon. However, the personal feelings of some of these drivers are not what are important. What is important is that safety concerns are met. And this is why many mandatory automobile safety laws have been enacted.

A recent study by a Newsday has shown that the number of accidents fatalities in automobile crashes has decreased significantly since mandatory safety laws were put into place.

These laws include mandatory seat belt rules, traction control, child safety seats, and antilock brakes among various other accessories. In addition to the number of fatalities these accessories have decreased, they have also been responsible for decreasing a number of lawsuits. The reason for this is obvious: The number of people injured or killed has greatly decreased. In other words, these devices keep any harm from the following the driver and the passengers. So, there really are no grounds to sue because serious injuries and wrongful deaths have been avoided.

If there was one problem with the Newsday car safety study it would be the fact that it infers there are no grounds for a lawsuit if these accessories have prevented the aforementioned injuries and deaths. However, there can be other grounds for a lawsuit present. For example, someone who suffers no injuries in a car accident could also sue a negligent party for infliction of emotional distress. Now, this does not mean that every car accident yields emotional distress damages as this is one example out of many possible scenarios.
