Meningitis and Hearing Loss

One severe side effect of meningitis is the development of hearing loss.

To say that bacterial meningitis is a difficult condition to endure would be an understatement. There are a number of serious adverse effects that this infection can cause if not treated properly. While it is most commonly known that the infection can cause a fatality if not properly treated, it has also been known to cause hearing loss in children. Needless to say, this can cause much panic in parents and make life quite difficult for the child.

While the percentage of children who have been admitted for treatment for bacterial meningitis who have developed hearing loss problems are relatively low, the fact remains that it is a risk that is present. If he goes around saying that suffering from hearing loss comes with a number of challenges. With great effort many of these challenges can be overcome although it would be far to adopt a mistake to say that these challenges can be easily overcome.

Of course, they would also be much easier to not have to deal with the onset of hearing loss in the first place but this is sometimes not the case when meningitis treatment fails.

Most assume that there really would not be any difficulty in treating bacterial meningitis. Honestly, there really shouldn't be a problem as there are a number of vaccines that can effectively eliminate the problem. Yet, many instances of bacterial meningitis are not affected of the diagnosed and, in some cases; there have been problems with the effectiveness of faulty vaccines. (Actually, instances of vaccines not working properly are much higher than most would initially assume) In these instances, anyone whose child suffered hearing losses as a result of faulty products or medical care may be able to seek civil remedies for the disastrous consequences that have resulted.

The Seriousness of Group B Strep

While a lesser known condition, Group B Strep remains a very serious condition nonetheless.

It is critical that doctors diagnose the instance of Group B Strep when delivering a baby. This is because there's an extreme consequence so she aided with the baby contract in this condition. Actually, there is roughly a 5% chance that the baby will die if the onset of the condition is serious enough.

Keep in mind, this form of strep does directly affect the brain and this makes it an incredibly serious condition. The additional fact that there is a chance of death associated with Group B Strep makes a shockingly unconscionable is there will be doctors who will miss all warning signs of this condition. Strangely, instances of doctors not diagnosing the presence of this problem are rampant. Many people wonder why this occurs especially when there are a number of serious consequences that can result if the baby is afflicted with the condition.

Seriousness of Group B Strep

Part of the reason is complacency. That is, the doctor has delivered so many babies over his career he starts to go on "autopilot: during the delivery. Many doctors assume that nothing negative happened badly in the past and do not modify their examination procedure beyond what they normally do. Clearly, this is not the way to go about delivering a baby and it is certainly not the way to go about preventing complications with the birth. It is, however, common way that serious illnesses can harm the baby. That is why many doctors find themselves being sued for damages when it is discovered their oversight led to the presence of this disorder.

There is only one right way to deliver a baby. This way involves performing all necessary examinations so as to make sure the presence of a seriously dangerous condition exists. This will protect the baby from any serious harm befalling the child. If a doctor deviates from these acceptable methods of practice and the doctor is being negligent.

Meningitis Outbreak Worries College Students

In a shocking study, it has been discovered that meningitis is rampant in college environments.

When parents send their children off to college it is not unreasonable that they worry about their health and safety. Usually, parents are concerned about risky behavior such as excessive drinking. They do not, however, concern themselves with such issues as infectious bacteria. More than likely, they are unconcerned about this problem because it is apparently nonexistent. Or is it? In recent years, there have been a number of surprising incidents where college campuses have notice and how break in meningitis.

Meningitis at Colleges

According to a report by MSNBC, college students are becoming incredibly susceptible to contracting forms of meningitis. There a number of reasons for this and all of them center on the fact it is not uncommon for bacteria to spread via the air. Since many college students shared dorms, if the bacteria becomes airborne many students are susceptible to contracting it. Of course, lifestyle choices in dormitories can contribute to the spread of the bacteria. This can include anything from sharing cigarettes to sharing drinks. This is why it is critical that meningitis be properly diagnosed when a college student displays the symptoms of the condition.

However, because some of the strains of meningitis are rare a doctor may misdiagnose the problem. Misdiagnosing meningitis is extremely dangerous because if left untreated a fatality can result. If a doctor is woefully negligent and fails to diagnose meningitis then the doctor may be held liable. Also, the college may possibly even be held liable if it did not take steps to correct in meningitis outbreak if it was obvious the bacteria was present within a particular environment. These are all things they will need to be discussed with an attorney in order to pursue legal action. Regardless of the negligence involved with the contracting of meningitis, there are complexities associated with the litigation that only a qualified attorney will be able to handle.
